Check Engine Light (CEL) Overview in 92-96; "...The check engine warning indicator comes on when the electronic engine control system is not working properly. The check engine warning indicator comes on briefly when the ignition switch lock cylinder is turned to ON, and should turn off when the engine starts. If the check engine warning indicator does not come on when the ignition switch lock cylinder is turned to ON or if it comes on while the vehicle is moving, the system is malfunctioning..." read more

Back-Up Light Switch (also referred to as Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) & Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Wiring Diagram (Partial) & Color Codes in an 89 5.8 C6; "...The lights in the back you are asking about are called Backup lights. A diagram of the circuit is attached. Do you have a volt meter? If you do, then turn the key to run and place the transmission in ® reverse. At the lamp socket check for 12 volts, (run a jumper lead all the way to the battery (-) rather than depending on the body metal for your ground). If you have 12V at the center contact in the light socket, you have ab ad ground. If you do not have 12 volts at the center contact of the light socket, go back to the Pink with black stripe wire at the transmission switch. If no 12 volts there check the other side of the switch (purple with orange stripe). I think you get the idea. When you get 12V the problem is between that point and the lamp socket. It could be either a corroded contact in a connector, a broken wire or the switch. I did not include the fuse because it also provides power for the turn signals..."

Brake Light Overview in 92-96; "...All vehicles use a brake warning light in the instrument cluster to warn of system malfunctions. The red warning light for the brakes can show three things; that either the parking brake is not fully released, that the brake fluid level is low in the master cylinder reservoir or the vacuum pressure is low on diesel engine vehicles. The anti-lock brake system uses one amber ABS warning light to alert the driver of malfunctions in the system. The amber ABS warning light will come on for numerous reasons. It warns the driver that the ABS has been disabled. Normal power-assisted braking remains but the wheels can lock during a panic stop while the indicator is on. Certain procedures must be followed to find the concern in this situation. Refer to «Section 06-09B» in the Powertrain/Drivetrain Manual for diagnosis and testing of the system. The yellow anti-lock brake indicator lights up for approximately two seconds when the ignition switch lock cylinder is first moved to ON or START for circuit prove out. The indicator also lights up when the RABS module detects a malfunction in the system. The self-test feature contains codes that indicate the area of the malfunction. When a malfunction is detected, the RABS control module shuts down the system and the yellow anti-lock warning indicator comes on. This permits normal braking. A code can be retrieved by momentarily grounding the diagnostic pigtail (black with orange stripe wire) after it is disconnected from KAM (keep-alive power red wire) and counting the flashes of the yellow ABS lamp. To make sure the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is not lost from memory, the ignition switch lock cylinder must be left in the ON position before the diagnostic lead is disconnected from KAM power. If more than one diagnostic trouble code exists, only the first code stored will be displayed. Additional codes will be output only after the first fault is corrected..." read more

Brake Shift Interlock Troubleshooting & Overview Compendium in 92-96
Source: by Ford via miesk5 at FSB
|
Brake Shift Interlock, Inadvertent Disablement TSB 99-13-9 for 94-96; "...Corporate, municipal, or police fleets may have had their 1992-1999 Ford Motor Company vehicle modified to flash the brake lamps whenever the police lights or other aftermarket lights are turned on, which may disable the brake shift interlock. The brake shift interlock is a feature that prevents the vehicle from being shifted from Park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Disabling of the brake shift interlock feature may enable the operator to inadvertently apply the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and simultaneously shift from Park to a Drive gear. ACTION: As appropriate, dealers should advise owners (including corporate, municipal, and police agencies) that any vehicle that has been modified with a connection to the brake circuit, or that electrically interfaces with the brake lamps in any manner, should be disconnected IMMEDIATELY and the emergency lighting system should be modified in a manner that does not interfere with normal vehicle operation or the brake shift interlock. In addition, if the high-mount stoplamp flashes when the police lights are on, the modification does not conform with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108 which requires that the high-mount stoplamp only illuminate when applying the brakes. Installation of warning lights should only be performed with a completely separate electrical system, without connection to any existing vehicle wiring. Connection of aftermarket electrical equipment into the brake lamp circuit or any other circuit which is connected to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), anti-lock brake computer, air bag system, or any other vehicle system, will cause vehicle malfunction..."

Re-Wiring 460 EFI Swap in a 79; "...OK, as usual, you will need, of course, the engine and accessories (if you want to run a serpentine belt), the computer and wiring harness (preferably out of a late 80'sor early 90's with either a C6 or a Manual Trans, can be either E or F series), as well you will need a fuel system that will be adequate to handle 40+ psi of fuel pressure, and a fuel pump that will deliver that 40+ psi of pressure (recommend a factory pump setup, or an aftermarket hi-pressure in-line fuel pump) (side note: I am taking that you have already taken out the old engine and have done the nessasary steps to install the 460 if the vehicle has not already had a Big Block in it already - 351m and 400 not included as big block). To start, you will need to do some re-wiring in the engine compartment, and also with the engine wiring harness. V+ Constant - Black/Orange - Yellow (EEC Power Relay/Fuel Pump relay). Switched - Red/Lt.Green - White - Grey/Yellow - Brown/White (HEGO,
Coil, EEC Power); Fuel Pump V+ - Pink/Black (or it can be Orange/Lt.Blue); V- - Black/Lt.Green - Black; Starter V+ - Red/Blue (it also connects to the distributor); Coolant Temp Sensor - Red/White, and Oil Pressure Sensor - White/Red; A/C Compressor - Black/Yellow (if you have no A/C, you can hook it up to a switch 12V, and use it as a bit of a high idle, I think that itwill take it up to 1100 - 1200 rpm; Speed Sensor - Dk.Green/White and Grey/Black (I don't use this, I only put this in here so you know about them), I have had no problems with the truck, not running the sensor, it has not kicked up some engine codes and or suffered any problems; Reverse Lights - Black/Pink and or Purple/Orange; Neutral Saftey Switch - Red/Blue; Check Engine Light - Brown, or Brown/Red;Well, that should be all the wiring color codes and attachments....now comes the actual swap..." Troubleshooting; "...If you have a problem when turning on one circuit it causes another to come on partially (dim lights, etc.), check the ground for the part or system that was turned on first. i.e., if you press the brake pedal & the parking lights turn on partially or fully, check the brake lights' ground; This is caused by current going thru da brake light bulb filaments & finding a ground in the parking lt. system instead of its own ground..."

Turn Signal Switch Failure Causes; "...The turn signal switch is very often misunderstood as to how it operates. The turn signal switch does more than operate your turn signals. It operates the horns, brake lights, and emergency flashers as well. For those who are electrically inclined or just would like to understand how the turn signals work, below is an explanation of the operation of the turn signals. When viewing the drawings, think of the turn signal switch oriented where the lever is pointing straight up and the switch is on it's side. As you can see, there are multiple points where age or corrosion may cause improper operation of any of the circuits. Also notice that the circuit for the brake lights goes through the turn signal switch. The brighter bulb element is used for both the brake lights and the turn signals. This is how the circuit for the emergency flashers works, using the existing brake light circuit contained in the switch. It's important that the turn signal switch be in good condition for the brake lights to operate properly. If the switch is worn, sometimes the actual weight of the lever can make the switch break the circuit for the left brake light but not quite connect the flasher circuit for that turn signal. This happens often and can confuse many an owner or mechanic in trying to learn why the left brake light won't work properly. A new turn signal switch does wonders for the overall operation of turn signals, horns, brake lights and emergency flashers. NOTE: There are kits that allow you to just change the cam plate on an old switch. For proper operation, the turn signal cam has to be correctly alligned and tightly installed. If the cam is worn out and needs replacing, chances are the rest of the switch probably needs replacing also. It is recommended that the complete switch assembly be replaced when needed to ensure proper operation of all functions the turn signal provides. Here is a dissassembled turn signal switch. The cam plate had been changed at one time but this shows how the contacts are oriented in the switch..."
